Alaskans fared quite well in the International Safety Media Awards. These awards were created to honor public safety messages designed to prevent injury and promote safety. Three Alaskan entries were finalists in their categories. Youth in Action, a division of Mothers Against Drunk Driving created an ad that won gold in the youth video category. Their message addressed preventing under age drinking. In the adult video category, Peggy Hayashi, director of Alaska Safe Kids, created the 2nd place video in the adult cateogry with her ad promoting Booster Seat use by kids ages 4-8. Alaskan videographer Larry Bottjen placed third in the adult video category with his series of underage drinking prevention ads. These ads were written and acted by youth at Brevig High School, Wasilla High School and Highland Tech High in Anchorage.
In the first ISMA contest, over 40 entries were received from around the world, including winning entries from the Phillipines, Cambodia, Washington DC and Seattle, Washington. There were two age groups for the awards, youth and adult. Within each age group media were divided into audio, video and print categories. The International Safety Media Award (ISMA) contest was held in conjunction with the World Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference, which is held every two years. The awards were announced at the 2006 World Conference in Durban, South Africa on April 5. The next ISMA contest will take place in 2008, at the next World Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The ISMA awards were hosted by the Alaska Injury Prevention Center and Teaching Story.
